How it’s caught
How it’s caught

Carefully caught in the cold, wild waters of the Chatham Islands, where strong swells and isolation shape every haul. Using selective methods like pot fishing and free-diving, making sure to harvest only what’s needed. Each catch reflects a slower, more deliberate approach - producing premium seafood like iconic Chatham Blue, Kina, and Paua.

Life on the edge
Life on the edge

800km from mainland New Zealand, the Chatham Islands sit on the edge of the Southern Ocean, where wild winds, powerful swells and isolation shape everyday life. Here, cold southern and warmer northern currents meet to create rare, nutrient-rich waters - producing seafood with exceptional flavour. It’s a remote, tightly connected community where fishing is done with care, using selective methods to protect the ocean for generations to come.

A Partnership Years in the Making

Long before this collaboration, Saltwater Seafoods director Marcus and Chatham Island Food Co director Delwyn were schoolboys at Lindisfarne College - a world away from the Chatham Islands for Delwyn, who arrived as a boarder on his own. What began as a shared connection through fishing quickly grew into a lifelong friendship, with the Marcus’ family taking Delwyn under their wing.

Marcus and Chatham Island Food Co director Delwyn

That shared passion carried them further afield, spending years in Australia working within the iconic Sydney Fish Market and Melbourne, gaining invaluable hands-on experience, sharpening their knowledge and developing a deep respect for quality seafood from catch to customer.

Both eventually returned home to New Zealand, bringing with them the skills, perspective and drive to build something of their own grounded in the same values they started with.

For us at Saltwater Seafoods, it’s about supporting a small, hardworking operation and bringing their exceptional Chatham Islands product into our range - offering our customers access to some of the best seafood New Zealand has to offer.

Chatham Island Food Co x Saltwater Seafoods FAQ's

From the remote Chatham Islands

Located over 800km east of mainland New Zealand, the Chatham Islands are one of the most isolated fishing regions in the country. The cold, nutrient-rich waters produce exceptional seafood harvested in small volumes and shaped by some of the harshest conditions in the South Pacific.

The fishery is wild, remote and carefully preserved.

Why this seafood is different
